Lloyd Franklin Moore Mercer, M.D.

With deep love, we announce the passing of Lloyd Franklin Moore Mercer, who died on July 26, 2026 in Madison, Mississippi.

Lloyd was born on January 7, 1944 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Lloyd Franklin and Veta Lois Walker Moore, both from Lamar, Colorado, shortly before Lloyd Sr went to Europe to serve in the Army in WWII. Lloyd Sr. was killed in action in Germany in February, 1945.

In 1949, Lloyd’s mom married Allen Vincent Mercer, a wonderful and caring man who raised Lloyd as his own to enjoy all types of outdoor activities but especially hunting. Though never formally adopted, Lloyd assumed the Mercer name as a school aged child and used it for the rest of his life.

Lloyd attended Sandia High School in Albuquerque, NM and went on to studied microbiology at the University of New Mexico. He continued his education by receiving a medical degree from Yale University. Lloyd practiced emergency medicine in Dalton, Georgia, where he was blessed with the birth of his son, Lloyd Franklin Moore III, by first wife, Janet Keifer Moore Mercer. He also practiced emergency medicine in Tucson, Arizona for several years before entering an orthopedic residency in the United States Army. After an honorable discharge at the rank Lieutenant Colonel, Lloyd practiced orthopedics in Hope, Arkansas and Jackson, Mississippi, with 13 years spent at the G. V. Montgomery VA Medical Center.

Lloyd’s love for hunting included being a life member of Safari Club International and in his many trips to Africa, he completed the Big 5 Game trophies (lion, cape buffalo, leopard, rhino, and elephant) and many other trophy animals. Along with numerous countries in Africa, he also hunted in Russia, Central and South America, Europe, Australia, Canada, and throughout the southwestern United States.

Lloyd is survived by his life partner of 28 years, Marye Elizabeth (Beth) Herring, son Lloyd Franklin (Trey) Moore III of Lynnwood, WA, sisters Carla and Lynn Mercer of San Diego, CA, aunt Joy Ann Peters of Lamar CO, niece Alex Lesniak (Jill) of Santa Clara, CA, nephew Dillon Lesniak (Nicole) of San Diego, CA, step-mother Helen Mercer of Tularosa, NM, step-daughter Brenda Rice (Michael) of Colorado Springs, CO and several close cousins.
