Duane Herman Lundy, long time Bristol resident, was born November 2, 1926 in Carter Oklahoma to Herman and Clara Lundy and passed away on January 20, 2023 at Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center in Walsenburg, Colorado at age 96.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy, and former wife Carol.

 

He is survived by his brother Farrel and sister Carolyn, along with his children David, Justin, Forrest, Nancy, Cindy, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

 

Upon graduating Highway High School in 1945 he was drafted into service during World War II, to the United States Army. He completed training as a tank destroyer at Camp Hood, TX. Being honorably discharged, after 2 years of service, he attended Sayre Junior College on a sports scholarship. From there he attended Oklahoma State University at the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1954.

 

On May 26, 1955 Duane married Caroline Elizabeth Poteet in Raton, NM. To this union were four children, Justin, Forrest, Nancy, and Cindy.

 

Duane began his career in education in Lakin, KS. Teaching History, Science, and coaching in De Beque, CO, Encampment, WY, Haswell, CO, also Two Buttes where he was Superintendent, and finished his teaching career at Holly, CO.

 

After teaching, he farmed and ranched several years where he raised Hereford cattle Northwest of Bristol, CO before retiring.

 

Duane thoroughly enjoyed photography, hunting and fishing which went hand-in-hand. In 1963 while traveling to Africa, he toured Rome, Italy, and Athens, Greece. He spent 21 days in Africa on safari where he hunted a wide range of species. Some of his most memorable trips include Alaska and Canada where he hunted moose and caribou as well as enjoyed salmon fishing. However, goose and pheasant hunting in Western Kansas and Southeastern Colorado was among his favorite.
