Camp for one year where he received vocational training as a mechanic, this starting him on his path with enlistment in the United States Navy in October of 1943. He served in the Navy for three years. During his time in the Navy he was stationed at three naval bases and on the USS LSM 26 as well as the USS LSM 343. While in the Navy he received numerous accommodations and was Honorably Discharged on May 27th, 1946 with a ranking of Ship's Cook First Class USNR.

Upon completion of his naval career he returned to Springfield where he met Mable Ruth Bickford. He and Mable were married on February 21, 1947 in Dodge City, Kansas with family and friends witnessing this union that lasted 67 years.

To this union Oliver and Mable were blessed with five children: Jeffery Wayne, Randy Alan, Monty Powers, Danny Darnell, and Sherry Elaine.

Prior to his employment with Colorado Interstate Gas south of Lamar in 1954, Oliver was a heavy equipment operator building dams in the southeast CO, as well as working for farmers in the Springfield area.  In 1958 he transferred to Elkhart, Kansas with the CIG Company where he and his family remained until 1971. In 1971 Oliver and his family returned to the CIG plant south of Lamar until 1979, when once again he and Mable were transferred to Elkhart, KS. They remained there until he retired from CIG in 1986. After retirement Oliver and Mable moved to their current home in Lamar, Co.

Oliver, known to many of his friends as "Ollie” or “O.P." was an avid outdoors man and sports man. Being the avid hunter that he was his last deer hunt was in the fall of 2012. He shared many happy days with family and friends hunting and fishing.

Oliver was a dedicated member of the V.F.W. Post #3621, where he served as commander for several years. He also shared his dedication with memberships in the Lamar Elks Lodge #1319 and Southeast Colorado Game and Fish. If you ever went to a fish fry you would see Oliver elbow deep in flour and cornmeal breading fish, telling stories or jokes with a smile on his face.

Oliver was a diligent worker and always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor.
