Willa Jean (Smith) Shumate
A celebration of life for longtime Lamar resident, Willa Jean (Smith) Shumate, affectionately known to her family and friends as Jean, was held at 10:00AM on Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Lamar First Baptist Church with Steve Knobbe officiating. Interment followed at Fairmount Cemetery.
Visitation for Jean was held on Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 1:00PM until 4:00PM at the Peacock Family Chapel.
Jean was born on April 26, 1934 at Lebo, Kansas to Raymond E. and Georgia May (Logue) Smith and passed away on December 21, 2015 at her home in Lamar with her family by her side at the age of 81.
She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Tom Shumate; granddaughter, Cassandra K. Shumate; grandson, Colin P. Shumate; sister, Judith K. Shefflette and her brother, Gerald “Jerry” Smith.
Jean is survived by her husband, Bennie Shumate of the family home in Lamar; son, James R. Shumate of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter-in-law, Kristen M. Shumate; grandchildren, Daniel T. (Jennifer) Shumate; Andrew P. (Emma) Shumate; Carley M. Shumate and Verva Jean Shumate. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Merle Smith as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends.
