Veda Florence Chittock

A Service of Celebration for longtime Lamar resident, Veda Chittock, will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the Redeeming Love Church with Pastor Mark Viar officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.

Visitation for Mrs. Chittock will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2008 from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Peacock Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chittock was born November 27, 1920 at the homestead of her grandparents south of Carlton, Colorado to L.C. “Cass” and Una Lee (Houchin) Ausmus and went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 21, 2008 at her home in Lamar at the age of 87 with her granddaughter by her side.

Veda was born on her grandparent's homestead south of Carlton, Co. The family lived on Mullen Street in Lamar until November 1925. Taking the train, the family moved to Santa Ana, California. Veda enjoyed sharing her memory of how she turned 5 on the train and how special she felt when someone gave her an apple and another person gave her a cookie for her birthday.

Veda had great admiration for her older brother, Bernell. When they were kids they did everything together. Bernell even allowed her to tag along on his dates a time or two. Veda often commented on how blessed she was to have such a wonderful brother as Bernell especially during those growing up years.

Veda married Gilbert Chittock on November 1, 1941. They were happily married for 66 years. Gilbert went to be with the Lord on October 8, 2007. Their first date was to a wrestling match in Los Angeles. They enjoyed fishing and camping in the mountains of Southern California at Big Bear Lake. Veda especially enjoyed the cabin that Gilbert built for them in 1954.

During World War II Veda went to Seattle, Washington and worked at Douglas Aircraft to be near Gilbert, who was stationed there before he was deployed to Pearl Harbor. In the early 1950's Veda worked for a short while at the Post Office in Santa Ana, California and tried her hand at being a sales clerk at Sears. But being a good wife and a wonderful mother was her main occupation.

On July 16, 1965 her son Bob with his wife, Lois and their 2 year old son were tragically killed in a traffic accident. Even though her heart was broken, her faith in God never wavered.

In July 1980 Veda and Gil moved back to Colorado along with her mother after her daughter, Dixie and her family moved to Colorado the previous year. She and Gil lived out in the country in McClave until 1996 when they moved to their present home in Lamar.

In 1950 Veda accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. From that moment on Veda's faith and trust in her Lord and Savior was her life. She loved studying and memorizing "The Word of God" adn soon was able to teach. Beginning with Vacation Bible School and teaching Jr. Church she went on to being a counselor at church camps and leading Bible studies. Teaching the Bible and sharing the gospel of Christ was her passion.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Gilbert Chittock, parents, a son anddaughter-in-law; Bob and Lois Chittock and her grandson, Michael as well as her brother Bernell.

Veda is survived by her daughter, Dixie (Bob) Gatchell of Lamar, grandchildren; Sheryl (Vince) Yoder of Lamar, Deborah (Brad) Owens of Lamar and Kathy (Mike) Lee of Alamosa, CO. His is also survived by her great grandchildren; Sarah Trosper, Kristen, Ryan and Felicia Yoder and Ashley Lee.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Redeeming Love Church direct or in care of the funeral home office.
