Dorothy J. Johnson

1941 – 2012

Funeral services for longtime Lamar resident, Dorothy J. Johnson, was held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Lamar.  Reverend Duncan Sprague will officiate the service and burial followed in the Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar.

Closed casket visitation for Mrs. Johnson was held from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Wednesday March 21, 2012 at the Peacock Funeral Home in Lamar.

Dorothy Johnson was born on July 7, 1941 in La Junta, Colorado to John G. and Mary E. (Lindt) Miller and departed this life on Saturday March 17, 2012 at St. Mary Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado at the age of 70.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband – Robert A. Johnson on June 14, 2002; by her parents, and by three brothers – George Elmer Miller, Johnny J. Miller, and Don Miller; and by two brothers-in-law – Harry Satterfield and Bill Tyree.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters – Lena (Brian) Shellberg of Lamar and Brenda Herrera (Mark Shellberg) also of Lamar; by three grandchildren – Adrienne, Sasha, and Tand; by two great grandchildren – Arai Warren and Arien Lucero; by one son-in-law – Carlos Herrera of Lamar; by one brother – Walt (Vi) Miller of Palm Springs, CA; by four sisters – Elsie Bevers of North Bend, OR; Mildred Tyree of Pacific, WA; Barbara (J.D.) Wilson of Sheridan Lake, CO; and Rose Satterfield of Collbran, CO; and by three sisters-in-law – Fern Miller of Las Animas; Bonnie Miller of Lamar and Dorrie Miller of Wagoner, OK; also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends.

Dorothy began school in Rocky Ford before moving to the Granada area where she attended Carlton school. The Miller family moved to Korman, Colorado where she attended Alta Vista, graduating from the 8th grade. In 1956 the family moved into Lamar where she attended the Lamar Union High School.

During high school she worked as a car-hop for A&W Drive-In on north Main. In 1958 while working there she met Robert A. "Bob" Johnson and they were married on November 15, 1958. To this union two daughters were born, Lena and Brenda.  Dorothy became a mother and a homemaker until

January of 1963, when she went to work for the Lamar Daily News as a bookkeeper and secretary.  She continued to work at the paper until 1978 when she and Bob bought Reid's Burger and Beverage.  Bob and Dorothy worked side by side in the daily operations of the business and in 1987 the couple sold their business to Loaf-n-Jug.  Before selling to Loaf-n-Jug, Bob and Dorothy purchased Wyatt's Burger and Fries and continued that business for two years and in 1988 the couple purchased The South Main Laundry, remodeled the facility, and opened what is now BJ's Burger and Beverage.  In March of 2000, Bob and Dororthy fully retired and sold BJ's.

Dorothy was baptized into the Lutheran faith as a young child, and c

ontinued her faith by becoming a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.  Dorothy enjoyed helping with the Two Shot Goose Hunt and her hobbies included crafting, traveling, fishing and camping, and most of all golfing.  Dorothy also enjoyed her shopping sprees with her daughters and also enjoyed all the holiday dinners with her family.  Her grandchildren were probably her biggest joy, as she made every effort to attend their school functions and loved to play golf with them.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Grace Lutheran Church either direct or in care of the Peacock Funeral Home.
